Cousin or Cuz, which I suppose a few white people say, is actually just way of greeting someone you're close to or just a weird habit. Even where I live in NZ, a lot of people people say cuz, bro,auntie, whaea and pa to literally everyone. You find it more when people are closer to islander communities/culture but it's a trend among some white people too. This can also be said for the word Aue that you see in the game sometimes, it's pronounced like OW (oww I hurt my toe). Usually refers to disappointment, or a specific person in envy/disappointment.
It's hard to ACTUALLY interpret what Kukui means by cousin. But I'm pretty sure he's not the MCs actual relative as he says it to the white steel user on mt hokulani too.
