>>30776995I'm consistently on the fence about this.
A part of me likes that they added a new type and that it helped to balance out Dragons and differentiate types like Dark and Bug from Ghost and Grass a bit more. It also gave a reason for offensive Steel and Poison moves.
On the other hand, the type conceptually doesn't really have a theme beyond "cute and pink." Why are the Marill and Ralts lines Fairy types, but Gothita or Pikachu not?
It also sort of steps on the toes of a lot of Psychic and Normal Pokemon, and muddies the waters of those types quite a bit. Prior to Gen 6, those were sort of your "catch all" types and now it seems to be Fairy. They bleed together way too much as typings, imo.
Also, Fairy is very centralizing. Does it really need to be immune to Dragon? That alone makes it kind of too powerful. It also is a very tough type to take down defensively. Being weak to Poison and Steel is awesome, but those types don't have the best coverage and there's only a handful of mons that can use them effectively within a moveslot without feeling like it's a wasted spot.
I also didn't like having to teach Steel and Poison moves to my Pokemon or carry those types on my team in SM. I do like both types quite a bit, but it sort of screwed with my Karenfag sensibilities when I had to start packing moves like Poison Jab and Flash Cannon or running Togedemaru/Scizor to make it through the main campaign with all those Fairies running around.
They just need to give it another weakness and make it just resist Dragon, IMO. Maybe make it weak to Normal? That could be interesting.
