I don't think it's odd, though. As I pointed out, when an RPG gives you the opportunity to play as a self-insert character, it is still your choice as to whether or not you play a self-insert character.
For me, my character is not a self-insert because I'm not a girl but my character is. She's just my ideal MC. That's all there is to it.
