Speed changes now apply as soon as you mega-evolve. Before, Beedrill would have to run Protect so you didn't just get blown up turn 1 by a faster opponent.

Aside from Fell Stinger buff, all Megas have turn order recalculated upon mega evolving.
Beedrill no longer has to run Protect to avoid being outsped

Kek. This is how Game Fug addresses Gen VI power creep; by removing Pokemon greatly buffed by the Mega Evo SPD recalculation.

I suspect it's so Alolan mon aren't curbstomped by Mega Evos that much. Not really surprised that Mega Evos are banned in VGC17 either.
