Yes. Ice is only good as an attack type and nearly any Water pokemon can learn Ice Beam and Blizzard. Dry Freeze is great, but it can't save Ice type pokemon by itself.

I get that no one wants to be Ice type but everyone wants Ice Beam. Nobody wants to be Psychic type and nobody wants Psychic coverage.

It's most commonly paired with Grass and Poison, neither of which help that coverage.

Let's go in order.

Rock is ironically a terrible typing defensively. Although lots of the Pokèmon in its pool are perceived as bulky powerhouses, rock is weak to the most undeniably common types such as steel, fighting, ground, water & grass. Besides that, it has almost no special defense. As for it's moves, it gets decent coverage with it destroying ice, fire, flying and bug. The only common types it can defend itself against fairly well is flying and fire, even then not making it that good.

As for grass, it's defenses are pretty shaky considering its pokemon get decent stats, but the types it's weak against make it a cancerous type to play with. Weakness to fire, flying, bug, poison and ice. Not only are 2 of those common, but all of those types' move distribution is wild enough to bring down all grass types. Offensively, it can fuck up water, ground, and rock. That's it. Three fairly common types, but the payout is not as good as the work done to it in battle.

As we all know, offensively, Ice is amazing. Every pokemon and their mother gets ice beam and blizzard and that shit fucks up not only grass, flying and ground, but fucking DRAGONS. Everyone wants this move no matter what for the coverage. However, defensively is where this typing falls flat. Weak to super common types such as fire, rock, steel, and fucking fighting. Now that's what I call a shitty defensive typing. Not only that, but only like 5 or 6 different ice types are actually viable in the current meta, the rest being slow and frail ice types only exisitng for their gimmicks.

Finally, we have Psychic. It is apparent that psychic is nothing special. Fucks up fighting and poison fairly well, but that's about it. As for it's weaknesses, dark, ghost and bug, simply put, you cannot send in your psychic type anymore. Super powerful pokemon in its pool, and super weak ones.

desu psychic wasn't even that broken in gen 1. Normal had way better pokemon, and ghost was better as a type in general (gengar would have been fucking broken as a pure ghost type back but luckily was part poison)

they seriously overestimated its power and didn't need to nerf it as much as they did. Making dark types resist it would have been enough. I mean why the fuck does steel resist psychic? Psychics are known for bending spoons with their mind, not having their psychic powers bounce off. it makes no sense and should never have been done.

In conclusion, it seems pretty obvious that grass is the worst typing. Further analyzed, grass is terrible defensively and has powerful moves. Not only that, but it follows the stupid special attack meme and does not cater to any physical pokemon, cutting it's already terrible usefulness in half. Grass has some petty powerful moves, sure, but the pokemon white have them usually die first becausr they're too slow to a flamethrower or a brave bird. There are more viable grass types than ice types, sure, but those few ice types are clearly much better than the 20 or so viable grass types. Besides, Ice Beam exists. Grass types are slow, gimmicky, shabby offensively and TERRIBLE defensively.

Defensively bugs are really safe though, only 3 spe moves, fire, rock and flying. fire/flying being uncommon coverage and rock being shitty (80% acc). Offensively its not great, but it generally gets good support moves like u-turn and bug buzz(by-pass subs).

Compared to psychic who has a fuck ton of mono-typed mons, there are more pure psychic pokemon then dual-typed ones. Offensively it covers nearly nothing and gets walled by any dark type. It's weak to common utility coverage like sucker-punch/shadow sneak/u-turn/knock-off, all of which fuck it hard.

Bug is way better then psychic simply because switching it in isn't a complete liability.

Grass is immune to Powder moves, has no immunities, and is one of the few types that is super effective against Ground and Water while also having more resistances than Psychic.

Rock is better offensively than Psychic while having no immunities and more resistances than Psychic.

Ice is better offensively than Psychic by having enviable supper effectiveness against Dragon, Flying, and Ground types and has no immunities.

Psychic has one immunity, two resistances, three weaknesses, meaning it gets hit for neutral damage from a lot of types.

That's not the only problem. It generally has to rely Focus Shit/Miss to try and make up for its immunity to Dark types. Luckily some of them do learn Fairy type moves as well.

All of those are good in spite of their typing. They'd be better with almost anything else.

Psychic typing is a hindrance. Some types are so good that you use a mon because of its typing. Psychic isn't like that.

Fast Steel type with an insane combination of speed, power, and bulk. Psychic typing helps it deal with Lele and its Fighting weakness.

Jirachi is a bulky Steel type, Mew is bulky and has options for anything, etc. etc. etc.

These mons were all made with Psychic typing being a balancing factor. Try finding a non-Psychic mon that has crazy-good traits like these do.

That sounds impressive until you consider ice types have literally not one pokemon anywhere as powerful or useful as Psychic types. At least you have viable options as psychic types, There is only one (1) good ice type, that that is Kyurem.

You're missing the point. GameFreak have a habit of making bad Ice types. It's a powerful offensive type, so they hold back, you could say.

Psychic is a bad type, which gives them freedom to make crazy-powerful Psychic type mons. There's a reason that half of the Megas and 680 BST legendaries are Psychic types.

Darks one of the best types. They weren't even really that nerfed in gen 6 since the new fairy weakness was balanced by the steel losing their resistance to dark types. And then dark types actually got buffed this gen with the prankster immunity.

At least Ice coverage is largely desired in a Pokémon; now go say the same about Psychic stab. You might want to carry it against Mega Venusaur but that's about it, really.

Rock is one of the best offensive types
Grass isn't a type for newcomers, their strenghts aren't usually in spamming some attack
Psychic may not be overpowered but it's fucking fine, plus lele
Ice is still king of shitness, at least it got aurora veil

It has exactly one unique advantage in 50% SpD boost in Sand that lets it carve a niche for itself (see Tyranitar), but otherwise it's really lackluster. Four resistances of average-to-questionable quality and five weaknesses that frequently turn to double weaknesses with other type combinations make it pretty bad defensively. STAB U-Turn for momentum grabbing while dealing considerable damage to things that don't resist it is a huge niche in itself and it synergizes really well with Steel, Fighting and Ground (tfw Flygon isn't Ground/Bug), making for great bulky and offensive pivots (see Genesect, Scizor, Pheromosa for Bug/Fighting variant, also experiments with Bug/Steel Jirachi which is a straight upgrade from Steel/Psychic). It's shit on paper both offensively and defensively, but being a countertype (resistance and SE) to both Ground and Water is a niche in itself. Also Spore, which is Grass's sorta-exclusive move. Overall small niche but it's there.

Also shit on paper, its niche being hard-hitting special attackers with Psyshock to get past special walls, and preferrably a synergetic secondary STAB for maiming physical walls.

>Ice
Everyone knows how shit it is defensively, but glass cannons don't care about their defenses (unless facing supereffective priority) and Ice STAB lets them murder a wide range of Pokemon.

All five are flawed to different degrees but not to the point of being directly crippling if a Pokemon's other qualities play to their strengths instead of trying to cover their weaknesses to no avail. Also people claiming Normal is anywhere near bad have no idea how to play Pokemon.
