There are parallels you could draw between space and liquids.
Space can be distorted like a liquid
Gravity looks like surface tension (not really)
Both have waves.

That's not the reason they chose Water but it fits more than Psychic.

The secondary typings don't have anything to do with their assigned roles. It's more of a tie into Arceus than anything else really. When Arceus created the universe, it created all matter and it created three pokemon to exemplify the physical states of matter and three other pokemon to exemplify the immaterial aspects of the universe. That's why the lake trio are all psychic types.

I choose to believe Palkia's based on the Mesopotamian creation myth, where primodial chaos and water met and created the universe.

The goddess of the sea was also the mother of monsters and her depiction was generall a dragon-lion esque creature with wings that look pretty similar to Palkia's.

It always made sense to me and I never bothered to think on it more than that.

Why they did states of matter on top of time-space and anti-matter? Beats me, but their typings are pretty cool.

That would have been cool as rotom seems ionized, but if there had been a dragon/electric, that would have been plasma, but I don't think they used plasma, as it is much less commonly observed as a state of matter. Strange we got TEAM plasma the next generation though

Hydrogen is the most abundant element in space, and was probably used to create Palkia. It must've fallen to the world like an asteroid after it was created, so the hydrogen burned and reacted with excess oxygen to turn it into a water type with a giant explosion.

I don't know how much of that is true.
