i would go with gold. because i think red would have stayed up the mountain if not for being beaten and shown he's not the best around, thats why he's adventuring with blue and you see them in s/m (and b/w2 but i dont know if that tournament is considered canon)

Not optional. It actually locks the postgame content until you beat it.

Credits the second time around doesn't mean much. This happens again in the series in BW, and it didn't matter then either.
