Compeditive has nothing do do with design elements. It has to do with stat, typing and abilities.

For example, Landorus, a shittilly designed pokemon, is a fantastic pokemon in the metagame.

And Tapu Koko, a fantastically designed pokemon, is also a fantastic pokemon in the metagame.

When you remove stuff like abilities and choices in stat distribution, and you boil literally all of the strategy down to just picking the supereffective move, it's basically just that superpowered rock-paper-scissors. If that's what you want because you're a simple person who likes simple games like chess, that's fine by me. But that isn't for me.

Also I could go into how terribly unbalanced the Gen I meta was with how hideously overpowered psychic-types were, but I won't bother.

Did you ever play an older gen like 2?

What will win you games isn't the rock-scissors-paper, but having the guts and knowledge to know when to boost, what you can withstand and how to remove the opponent's keyplayers so your sweeper can, well, sweep.

Despite not having all that crap, it's unbelievable how deep the game was in gen 1 and 2 despite most characters having similar stats and moves. It was a game of mind, not a game of team-matchup.

The deepest mechanics were IVs and they didn't matter then. Other than that it was just glorified rock paper scissors especially in gen 1 where boosting literally didn't matter outside of amnesia
