Yes, as long as you treat it as a late game cleaner not a sweeper like Protean Gren.

Slap specs on it and a boosted Hydro Pump in rain destroys everything.

They build up all that hype for Ash-Greninja and now it doesn't even exist in Ash's rotation so it can never have an awesome comeback like Charizard gets every season. In fact, I don't think Ash has a pokemon he can mega evolve at all.

Don't think it works like that. I tried something similar by reloading the demo save before I had transferred the Greninja to the game with JKSave Manager. Didn't work. It's probably the game itself that denies it.

Yeah, the game won't let you have more than one Ash-Greninja even if you trade it away new demos won't give you another one. If you want another one you'll have to restart your game

There are crazy people out there. Although you are right, it is not common. Charizard has a guaranteed 2HKO. Greninja's Water shuriken needs a high count to 2HKO. So it boils down to LUCK. That is pokemon for you.
