Playing this for the first time ever. What Pokemon should I go for? What starter should I use? Keep in mind that I'm playing through it normally, so no GTS or hacks unfortunately.

I don't like a lot of the Gen 5 Pokémon, so I'm using this team on my new playthrough:
Lucario
Crobat
Arcanine
Zoroark
Those 4 are planned, I'm having trouble picking out the other 2, but it'll be a while until I even get these 4 I guess.
Fun game, use whatever the fuck makes you feel good.

If you go with Tepig, you can eventually teach him Thunderpunch in exchange for ten Red Shards that a guy in the Nimbasa pokemon center gives to you for free. The move tutor is at the PWT in Driftveil.

At one point, you'll be forced to fight a Minccino. It has its hidden ability, Skill Link. Catch it and teach it Tail Slap, Bullet Seed, and Rock Blast. Surprisingly effective and versatile.

Might go with Electivire and Mamoswine for the last two if I can get them. Or Eviolite Electabuzz, whatever.
