Why can't we just have Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle again?

Or even have it so Professor Maple gives you a Rattata. Sure it's not a great starter but you wouldn't feel compelled to finish the game with it, you'd catch something better on Route 1, like a Pidgey.

The S/M starters do not inspire me at all.
