Plus, getting Ice Beam to cover your bases (and other assorted Ice-type moves early on) is very useful. I do agree with you in that Gyarados tends to be better but honestly the games are easy enough that it's generally not an issue and when it is the Grass-type starter tends to be the inferior choice anyway.
