They both sold really well because of marketing and hype (and, let's be honest, a good chunk of those extra sales were from GO "fans" who hadn't played since Gen 1 and decided to try Pokemon again), as well as the absolutely autistic reviews that most people gave these games (seriously, if you're giving 9/10s and 10/10s to SM, being hypocritical about the stuff it copied from Yo-kai Watch by saying it's good in Pokemon but not Yo-kai Watch, and just acting like a completely ignorant fanboy, your review is worth absolutely fucking nothing to anyone).
But at the end of the day, those "record-breaking sales" mean absolutely fucking nothing, because half those people aren't even playing the games still, and there is almost zero longevity for these games. Why the fuck do you think Stars is even happening?
And also, on that subject: fuck Pokemon Stars. If the rumours are true, they straight-up shelved Sun and Moon for months to work on adding new content to Stars (i.e. content not in SM), and then came back to SM to polish them in the last two or three months before release. So they were developing a superior version alongside this disaster, and even then, I guarantee Stars will come out and be barely any more competent. Though the rumours are that there will be another 20 new Gen 7 Pokemon and more Alolan forms (I don't remember the number), so if this is true, it just proves how absolutely half-assed and half-baked Sun and Moon are.
TL;DR not surprising; Game Freak can get fucked.
