What was Pokemon like Stateside before the English version of Red and Blue was released?

I just noticed Japan and the world were 2-3 years apart with the first gen.

Got the games when they first came out. Didn't really hit it big until late 1998/early 1999.

Christmas 1998 was weird. My parents, in all of their parental love, got me the game because of pokemania. I was 4.

We had the Anime long before we had the games. So the hype was extremely built up during that period. Once Pokemania hit its stride it was glorious.
