Jon and Arin were funny because there was a bit of friction resulting from Jon calling out Arin on his bullshit, and vice-versa. Any time Dan disagrees with Arin, or obviously doesn't find something he said funny, he either reponds wih "haha, I guess" or "oh c'mon, Arin!", and then quickly changes the subject.
Dan basically acts like a milktoast beta, and his best jokes are based on agreeing with Arin and paraphrasing something he just said. Other than terrible puns, the occasional joke about weed or dicks, and some singing-based quips, Dan has nothing.
Jon and Arin complimented one another because Jon had the balls to call Arin out on his bullshit. Some of the funniest moments (like Nickelodeon Guts for example) come out of this kind of banter.
