He ages, he can actually understand the concept of liking a girl, and he actually won a league tournament and was going to be a gym leader if he didn't get injured with frostbite.

Yeah, no. Those are all pretty insiginificant compared to their personalities being exactly the same aside from hormones. Winning leagues isn't important or even all that amazing. Especially in Red's case since Gold kicked his ass.
