As for your "sense of exploration" did it not occur to you how linear Sinnoh actually is? The problem arose in how similar everything looked across the region and how much the player had to go back on their trail giving you the illusion of exploration when you were just going in a glorified straight line.
It just so happened that you enjoyed what millions of nip children hated with a passion.
Even Unova had a better design than Sinnoh because of how clear the main route was but how hidden the nooks and crannies were across the region.
