My life went wrong.

Spent an unhealthy amount of time on these games. Loved them way too much.

These games made me enjoy pokemon again. While I'm still here, Game Freak's safe approach, constant gen 1 pandering and focus on shallow features with cute graphics are slowly killing my interest again.

I have a mere 30h player on Moon... can't even stomach playing it again. Will the magic ever come back? Or maybe I'm just too old for this.

No continuity with previous games
No American themes except maybe Victini despite ostensibly being New York
No innovations to the franchise, was basically just a mostly-unfucked Gen 4

Good gen, but it has lots and lots of flaws.

Hard to describe but everything just felt sorta bleak and dull in bw1, might have just been the colors used or the weird season crap which ontop of the sprite/3d, and the terrible battle animations, everything just felt all uncanny valley like.

I wasn't until sometime after bw2 came out that i found out that unova was supposed to be pokemon america (I went into gen 5 completely blind), maybe that had something to do with it.

The introduction of non-shit pokemon, the bare minimum complexity for a region and less focus on their autistic fanfic story did make the change from BW into BW2 a change from "terrible" into "passable", you're right anon. Guess that's best you can hope for out of Gen 5.

While I would agree that the starters, lesser legendaries, and a decent portion of the dex weren't what I had hoped; It did not significantly effect the overall experience. After all, I would assume most people only (genuinely)love 10 or so pokemon from each generation anyway.

Honestly I like this Gen, its crazy to think that it's two generations ago now.

But honestly? There was way too much movement, visually. Everything swayed and shifted, the trees, the people. That, plus the 2D sprites on a 3D plane meant that the entire screen was changing.

Sprites, too. If they were actually frame-by-frame animated it'd be awesome, but skeleton mapping on 2D sprites just does not work.

Back in 2010 the graphics amazed me, in hindsight I think Gen 4 and even Gen 3 look way better. In hindsight its definitely the midpoint between Sprite pokemon gamed and Model pokemon games, and in the end I think it's a lot uglier than both.

My biggest problem with BW which B2W2 fixed: the poke variety feels like a small trickle as you progress in the story, took ages to get a my full party
Even RBY was better in this regard, which BW tried to emulate in pokemon selection

They were both bad, but Unova's is infinitely worse for taking up the entire central peninsula between Castelia and Nimbasa. It's something that is only there as a geographical restriction that excuses having a single route going through such a large area, however the way it is so unnaturally sown into the map almost ruins the entire region.

If they really wanted a sand area that restricts the central peninsula I'd rather they have just done a really thick quicksand forest. Then they could have Mayan-like ruins for a more American flavour at the Desert Resort and Unova would have cohesively been "the forest region" (as Hoenn, Sinnoh and Alola are the tropical, snowy and island regions) instead of being mostly "the forest region" but with ground zero of an orbital strike just thrown in the centre.

It's just a really jarring design descision is all.

One of the things that went wrong was the stupidly high level evolutions. Seriously, unless if you transfer that over with your living dex it's going to make completing the dex for all future games a massive headache, and the Pokemon aren't even strong enough to justify an evolution that will take you that late into the main game.

Left out the biggest problem: Gen 5 marked the starting point of when the games became significantly easier. I recall being bored to tears for the most of the battles.

I don't know what it was, but BW was the first pokemon game where I just put the game down and didn't pick it back up due to disinterest. It felt so boring to play and bland is a good word for it.

No early Pokemon caught my eye so other than my starter I felt no interest in my team, and knowing the full region list I still can't fill a team with likable new Pokemon. The battle animations were garbage. Probably should have stuck it out longer and given it more of a chance since I'm a storyfag and I heard Gen5 has a great story, but a game is bad if it bores you to disinterest in the first hour it's a problem.

Personally I wasnt even aware people had trouble with it. I dont remember any complaints about it back in the day and I just swept it with DDance Haxorus.
