Most women would rather be the 10th wife of a rich man, than the only wife of a regular man. Much higher standard of living and more security for their children.
Christianity with it's "1 man 1 wife" stuff is a tremendous benefit to most men. That kind of situation wouldn't happen naturally. Women would all go for the same dominant/rich/powerful man if they were allowed to.
