95% of battles in-game went the same way: send out strongest pokemon, Z-move, OHKO and then finish off the trainer's other pokemon.
Z-moves were actually implemented worse than mega evolutions, somehow. The game gives you no reason not to use it asap, so you basically get a free nuke every single time you fight.
