DS has the best and worst games in the franchise, GBA has a small selection of consistently OK games, 3DS has the most modern but also generally most mediocre games, and GB has the classics, love them or hate them.
I'll have to say DS > 3DS > GB > GBA. HGSS, BW, and BW2 definitely balance out Sinnoh, and XY and SM were good enough. I believe the GB and GBC games have enough charm and merit to go back to and still have fun with, even being held up only by GSC if one hates the originals that much. Hoenn and FRLG are OK, and it's not exactly a step down from GB, but I don't like them as much.
