Among all the starters we have had two based on the same animal (turtwig/Squirtle)

What animal could you see them repeating in future generations?

If we're including all evolutions then we've also had two seals, Samurott and the Popplio line. And before someone says Samurott is a sea lion not a seal, sea lions are a type of seal.

Sea lions are a type of Pinniped dingus. Not seal. Its like saying a walrus is a seal.

Anyway Samurott more of a giant otter with sea lion characteristics. Its more terrestrial than a sea lion(4-footed mammal with separate tail) and has fingers with thumbs over flippers.

It's literally been stated in an interview that samurott was inspired by sea lions and even without that it's plainly evident that it has at least some sea lion characteristis that otters do not have.

There are claws on the end sure, but sea lions have those too albeit not as prominent as samurott (but otters aren't that prominent either). Also they don't look much like fippers in that art granted but they certainly do in other depictions.

It's still nowhere near Samurott's snout whereas sea lions are.

Anyway its literally confirmed that Samurott is based on a sea lion so you're arguing nothing.

Of course it still has otter influences. But the entire point of this discussion is that Samurott is at least partially sea lion and thus the same animal as the Popplio line.

Because that would ruin the naming pattern of the line? And it's not as if Pokemon names are always accurate, especially the English ones. Charmeleon is nothing like a chameleon.

Popplio at the very least is, given its obvious basis on sea lions that are trained for tricks like balacing a ball (as popplio does with bubbles)
