Maybe something like Mystery Dungeon, with dropped items being Potions, TMs, and skins ("Recruited Pokemon") for you personally to play as?

Similar to runescape in that everybody's running around as trainers but pvp is only in a certain location.

Real time wild encounters, you can see pokemon in the grass
Classic turn based trainer battles in the overworld, you can challenge anyone as they walk by
Gym leaders are cpu's but players can be gym leaders for some amount of time, or maybe in a certain location
Players can become the champ of a region by beating the previous champ, who is a player. if the player is inactive for a while or stops doing battles he loses his title to a cpu, first person to beat the cpu is the new champ. one champ per region, maybe a world champ somehow
Trade with anyone walking by
