Are any of the Z moves competitively viable? And by Z-,moves I mean actual Z-moves not the Z-status moves

Some people use it on Focus Missers to guarantee a hit, or A-Grenin to get the easy transformation.

They're good to get past mons that would otherwise counter you. A decent example of this is Groundium Z Sandslash-A in VGC to lure and nuke fire types that threaten it and Ninetales.
Also, some mons with unreliable STABs now get a powerful and reliable ZTAB, altough it is a one time use, it's still pretty good.
And then you got the option of a powerful nuke just for the sake of big damage and get a surprise KO.

Outside VGC? Z-Fly Salamence and Dragonite and Landorus. Z-Solar Beam Heatran and Volcanion. Z-Stone Edge terrakion and breloom. Z-Scald manaphy if it doesn't use Z-rain dance. Z-Hyperspace Fury Hoopa if it doesn't use Z-Snatch. Z-Brave Bird Talonflame since it allow you to actually do Two Brave Bird if you get it in at full. Z-Focus Blast tapu lele.
Swords Dance garchomp now usually uses either Z-Fire Fang, Z-Earthquake or Z-Dragon Claw. Z-Freeze Shock kyurem. And they are vital to VGC strategies.

Silvally with Neckbreak blitz used from EXPLOSION is a son of a bitch, because it's as if he could potentially use explosion twice, and the first time being more powerful with no drawbacks.

Also the Tapus besides Fini can run a Z-Crystal if they need it for coverage or just to guarantee a kill.

I feel like in singles they aren't terribly good, but in VGC they're nice on certain pokemon that don't need an item otherwise as it gives them essentially a kill-switch to just remove a pokemon from the game, even if it's a tank.

You bypass the 1 turn of set up Fly usually uses and for some Pokemon like Landorus it's the only good STAB they get.

Is it for offensive flying moves or status ones? For the former, Flyinium-Z Salamence easily. DD Moxiemence is ridiculous with Z-Fly as Flying-neutral counters get slaughtered and end up as Moxie fuel.

Z-Crystals also can't be Knocked off or Tricked. Which makes the user serve as the team's Knock Off/Trick absorber similar to megas. Rockium Z Terrakion btw, is probably the best Knock Off sponge in the game. Its already threatening after a single Justified boost, and has the option to use a much stronger Rock attack.

I still don't know if I prefer Electric Porygon Z or Ghost Porygon Z. Ghost has better neutral coverage but leaves you weak to Shadow Sneak/Pursuit Trapping/Sucker Punch, but Electric only has one weakness but not as great neutral coverage. But STAB Adaptability TBolt is nothing to sneeze at either.

As dumb as it sounds, the +1 to defenses gives PZ a good amount of bulk, just enough to survive an unboosted move from a good attacker. My Z can reliably take a Scarfchomp's EQ and OKHO in return.

If you actually payed any attention to the thread, you'd realize I was talking about you being a casual in the sense that you have no real feel for competitive play. Several people have listed several ways that Z-Moves have actually HELPED develop the metagame in some fashion, and then here you coming talking about the main game as if anyone actually gives a shit. I think Special Pheromosa like to use Z-Focus Blast for the sheer power and 100% accuracy. It'll take out practically anything that's not a ghost/boosted, while potentially giving a Beast Boost in return.

I dunno where Talonflame will end up, but I think Z-Brave Bird might see some use in its tier. It's not quite as spammy as Talonflame is used to, but the ability to throw a flying nuke while still maintaining Gale Wings seem useful in the long run.
