>>31406644>but that's also on wii uAnd do you think Nintendo is going to promote the Wii U version over the Switch version? Do you think people who didn't own a Wii U are going to buy one NOW for Breath of the Wild? Or do you think they're going to see the better versions of BotW and Mario Kart 8 on the hot new console that can play them on the TV as well as on the go?
The average consumer (ie. non-core players of video games) still thinks that the Wii U is an accessory to the Wii. People I know who don't play video games have asked me what I thought of the Switch. If anyone ever asked me about the Wii U, I would usually have to explain to them that it's a new console.
The biggest reason that the PS4 sold so well was its 10/10 marketing, and the fact that Microsoft shot the Xbox One in the foot over and over again during its launch. Sony made perfect use of that fact by going "Hey, we're not those guys!" and "#4theplayers". That Perfect Day commercial in late 2013 was perfect. Nintendo seemed to forget to market their console after its launch, and it went 7 straight months without any effort put into marketing when it really needed it.
The fact of the matter is that there's never a singular reason a console does good or bad. It's a combination of factors, and there were MANY miscalculations with the Wii U, while there were MANY spot-on decisions for the PS4, enough that it sold great through dry seasons, confusing even Shuhei Yoshida. The Switch is probably more on the positive side right now, with the biggest detractors being how much the consumer is being charged for a full experience. The $300 launch price is acceptable ($250 would have been optimal), but 1-2-Switch not being a pack-in is a misstep. According to ProJared who spoke to Reggie, the decision for paid online was at the behest of third-parties so that they could feel assured that they would be making a profit with their games. While I hate the idea of paid online, if it helps...
