in america the word herb is pronounced "erb" and treated as if it is spelled that way.

in other parts of the word it is pronounced "herb" and so the use of the word "an" would be incorrect but here it is the correct american usage.

It's "an", you retards. "An" is reserved for vowels and in some cases words in which the beginning sound sounds like a vowel. (I.e an hour is "our") and "a" is reserved for consonants.
