Shauna had an extremely different dialogue tree, and the creators came out and said "She's the male character's love interest"
It also came out extremely flat and people just shipped the protagonists together

The real answer is that nobody cared. The XY characters didn't matter. They were all looks with no depth, and nobody gave two shits about what Shauna's relationship with the MC was.
