Each monster used stamina for each attack. You could block attacks using a shield that used stamina or you could try doing a perfect dodge, which took less stamina. Doing a perfect dodge also let you not create some special kind of energy balls that you could collect by moving your camera and I don't remember if they were used to replenish stamina faster or if they were currency. Maybe both.
There were many times where I just tried to use my strongest attacks at the start and then, I would perfect dodge and use my light attacks to finish the battle. At least you can customize how your creature grows, so you can get one with tons of defense, stamina that goes up really fast or one that hits hard.
Still, there were tons of bad decisions in this games.
