If you really think about it, Aegislash is a gimmick mon. Its gimmick is being able to switch between defensive and offensive sets at a whim. With a poorer typing or stance change using a shittier move to switch formes, or a worse movepool, it could be garbage. But it has one of the best defensive typings in the game with good STAB coverage and a solid movepool, so it becomes really strong.

There's no real reason to have Shadow Ball/Flash Cannon to be honest. If they wanted to make Aegislash a physical attacker... Why did they give it these moves and that much Sp. Attack?

typing definitely plays a role. If it was grass/ice for example, that slow speed would be a lot more problematic since it has much more weaknesses to exploit. Weakness to rocks would also greatly hinder its ability to switch in and tank a hit.
