Where did the RootHoot grass owl thing originate?

How did it become a big thing in the lead-up to Gen 7... where an actual grass owl was revealed?

This is the actual answer OP. We knew the japanese starter names before a lot of other things, and Roothoot and co. were """leaks""" based on "knowing" what the starters were. Cubble and Finpip are the other two, if I remember correctly.
