It's kind of an average "Girl has a crush on a romantically oblivious boy from afar but is too shy to push the issue" storyline. Hinata from Naruto, Sakura from Nozaki-kun, Sumia from Fire Emblem Awakening... it's all been done before. There's also the limitations of being a kodomo anime that were put on it, which is what probably lead to things like Ash only giving somewhat random, vaguely worded praise and not getting them into more romantic situations.
