New to TCG

I've never played the Pokemon Trading Card game and I've been interested to try it out.

So i bought the old video game version to use as like a tutorial before I try to buy any real cards and it's actually EXTREMELY fun.

But how much has changed since this old video game came out? It's only Gen 1.

Where the fuck do I even begin?

Playing the Trading Card Game Online is probably a good start. It has a single-player mode too.

The Game Boy game is very easy by comparison and lets you get away with whatever strategy you feel like. The real card game doesn't really do that.

Prepare for people online to be using ridiculously expensive overpowered decks that you need thousands of packs to be able to compete with, and people at IRL Pokémon Leagues to be the type of people who've probably gone to jail for child rape but are too autistic to understand why that's not a good thing.

You should definitely play PTCGO. Current thread is here: >>31492927. It's free to play so there's no reason not to at least try it out.

The basic rules are essentially the same, but you will have to get used to the new cards.

This is not even close to true*. There are several viable cheaper decks and even decks that run 4 Shaymin-EX (expensive staple, unfortunately) only cost a couple of hundred packs.

When you first start you will have mostly junk and will kind of have to make do with theme deck matches. The good thing is that most of the expensive cards (like Shaymin) are pretty versatile and go in pretty much any deck; so once you get hold of them you're pretty much set..

*Unless you're running 4 SR Ultra Balls

Didn't say that. Just pointed out that your estimate was out by a factor of 10.

It's not though. If you grind for packs you're wasting your time. Trading makes getting expensive stuff easy. I played about 3 tournaments to win 6 packs then never played another; I got hundreds of packs within a couple of weeks.

You can get hundreds in days if you want to grind trading, but you don't have to.
