Honestly they're just silly, simple games. They have good difficulty, simple but charming stories, and are typically easy to pick up. They're good for both beginners and veterans alike. Unless you absolutely must play in order I recommend starting on III, IV, or V (my first). VIII is also quite liked but I'm just playing it now on 3ds and don't like it much personally though MANY people love it. VII is my favorite personally but it is not recommended as a first, or even second game.
Also V is kind of proto pokemon, monsters join and fight with you.

All it takes its 2 FUCKING evasion moves (good luck lol) and you are set.
Drapion is surprisingly bulky and can take an earthquake, and if you get lucky with +def or +spdef, good luck.
That being said, taunt, wallbreakers,roar, whily wind and shitty luck can make it a waste of a spot

Even with little attack investment, you can take out most non-defensive ice types,
except maybe Cloyster , assuming they don't flinchhax you with Icicle Crash or something.
There's nothing forcing you to make only Smogon-approved movesets.

Of course there's Gaim which goes from light hearted comedy to anime-esque suffering around episode 13 and contains some of the most hype moments in the series. OOOs and Fourze are also solid entry points, a lot of people recommend W but it's extremely lacking later on. If you don't mind slightly older shows and like more episodic comedy DenO is adored by most of my friends. Whatever you do though DONT WATCH WIZARD OR GHOST.

Togekiss can be as well with ether scarfflinch or paraflinch
Clefiable needs a crit by ether a physical hitter or be lucky to have it out before it sets up cosmic powers then stalls with moonlight and can't be toxic'd ether depending on ability.
All of which right now can be obtained before bank came out and now, tho unfortunate to say Megas can't be used for bank so mawile it's massive beatstick isn't braindedding the type harder along with mega waifu.
It's a type of rng, luck and brainded useage.
