The only way to back the data up is to use transfer codes which are annoying as hell to use. That, or contact support and hope you get a timely response. For a game that's constantly connecting to the Internet and its servers, it's baffling they're tying account data to phones instead of just, you know, the accounts.
Pokemon Shuffle has the same system and it's horrible. If you get a new phone, you have to transfer everything over with codes. You can contact support to do it for you if you don't have the codes but it takes days for them to help you.
