I honestly don't get why people still rather play Gold and Silver as opposed to Crystal version which is essentially the definitive version of Gen 2. Is it just nostalgia or do people hate the changes made in Crystal?

Same reason why people play Ruby/Sapphire instead of Emerald or Diamond/Pearl instead of Platinum

You can't fully admire the changes from the third versions without playing at least one of the older ones first

Also Crystal has no Mareep so its objectively the shittiest version of Gen2

All have better options for them in GS. Mareep is the only decent electric pokemon you can get

You can also catch growlithe as soon as you get to goldenrod in GS, what are you talking about?
