It's not part of a group, it doesn't seem to do much by lore. It exists to pad Gen IV's dex and pad the already huge Legend count. Is it only there so Frontier Brains can use it?

Probably meant to be a pseudo-legend, but they ran out of time to design two pre-evos for it, so they just made it a legendary

Legendaries in the National dex have a "holographic" background. Neither Mewtwo nor Heatran have it. Only Box Legendaries, Third legends and mythicals have it

This ties with the new "legendary" classifications.

Trio legends and other "lesser" legendaries are classified as "sub-legendards", box legends and mythicals are called legends.

Yeah Mewtwo doesn't make sense. They can't say it isn't legendary because it was man-made because Genesect is Legendary. Its BST is also right at the top so unless its a bug I don't know

Heatran is the best kind of legendary. Maybe it's just the genwunner talking through me but I much prefer if a legendary is just a very strong Pokemon hidden behind a complex puzzle rather than some universe tearing almighty asshole handed to you by some fucking clerk in the Pokecenter.

You could say that about some of the legendary trios, honestly. I wouldn't mind if Heatran got some more lore, but I really like how it's handled in DPPt. It's just a powerful Pokemon that you can catch if you're able to get through a dangerous volcano filled with strong trainers.

With all of the volcanoes heatran shows up in, I just assumed it was a rare pokemon on the surface. They're actually numerous down in the mantle and breed down there, hence the genders. It'd be pretty neat too. People just saw it on rare occasions when one popped up and caused some damage. Maybe they learned how to get a reaction from them using magma stones or something.

Well, Swampert completely dominated gen 3 and it checked a lot of things weak to ground (Metagross and Tyranitar being examples).

I honestly think that Heatran in gen 3 wouldn't be very good. But gen 4's powercreep made Swampert less dominant as it couldn't reliably check offensive set up pokemon anymore.
