A Mega is basically a direct buff to that pokemon making it usable in a similar way to a mon gaining a new ability. Emphasis on it because it's still that Pokemon you haven't evolved it, you haven't swapped it out it's still that the same pokemon you had before you mega evolved it.
You will always have to send out the shitmon and change it into the mega.
With Evolution now you're doing exactly that you've swapped out the preexisting mon with something that looks and sounds different and like this anon said

Basically that shitmon has now been shoved to the side completely for this new, potentially unappealing Pokemon
