He embodied the 'truth' and 'ideal' aspects that the whole game was trying to hammer on with the story. He fought for the idea of trying to save his Pokemon friends, when his view of the world was narrow, shaped by what he was exposed to while growing up. As the game progresses, he realizes that he did not, in fact, know anything, and then goes to try and expand his horizons - and seek his 'truth' for himself.
