Either Drayden is old as fuck, given that Magearna was created 500 years ago, or else the Pokéball design and pattern is based off of something else in nature that these Pokémon were mimicking.

I mean, Kurt was a traditional Japanese style artisan crafting pokeballs out of fucking nuts, so I'm sure there've been pokeball-esque things in the past possibly under different names, and probably developed independently around different regions
