Ash has been boring as fuck once he stopped being a hothead. But that to be expected since times change. And is more of a reason the anime should have changed up the male lead.

Japan has always loved stupid puns, they'll put more brain power into a stupid punny name like having a fat guy named fatty, but can be read as round and when said fast sounds like belly or some shit over having a good worldbuilding, characters, story, and dialog. This is omnipresent in nearly all japanese media.

He literally has almost NO characterisation outside of godawful Pokemon puns and metaphors that exist solely for the purpose of making a pun out of a Pokemon's name and accompannying it with an uncanny valley mon impersonation, made worse by the subpar dub team who can't even pronounce the L in Popplio.

They adapt them so they make sense in English.

This line is "Pokemon School e youkoSolrock", so the subs reword the so it still ends with an S and they can put the name "Solrock" onto the end of it the same way the Japanese does.

The puns aren't particularly clever, so they're not too difficult to adapt like this.

Sorry, but shit like "Dig it, jack, lugs off!" is trash dialogue- TPCi has some of the worst writing in its dub in the history of English dubs. When even 4Kids and their fetish for censoring managed to have a better voice cast, music, and a script, you know you've fucked up immensely.
