Will Game Freak pull the same shit they did with Mega Stones next Generation? Will this trend of adding like only a quarter of useful items/forms and releasing the rest as stupid time based events continue in the future?

Probably the special Z Crystals for Pokémon unaviable in the next gen's Regional Dex are going to be event only, I don't think they would pull this off with universally aviable Z Crystals.

The next gimmick for the next game is that 2 designated partner Pokemon can hold 2 items (as long as the second item is a Mega Stone or Z-Crystal)

A lot of hold items are probably gonna get nerfed as a result of it

At first Z-Crystals make complete sense. It's too much work to give every mon a mega form so just give them a type-based supermove that every mon could use.

That's before the game starts handing out shit like "Snorlium Z" and you realize that they didn't learn from their mistake at all.

Yeah, so far I think the only interesting ones are Stoked Sparksurfer because it always paralyzes, Genesis Supernova because it also summons Psychic Terrain and Extreme Evoboost because it doubles all stats.
All of the others are just more damage than a generic Z Move.

I mean, they technically are equipped to the Z Ring, it's just their energy bond takes up the item slot as a balance concern.
That's why you can have as many pokemon as you want "hold" the same Z Crystal.

Unlike mega evolutions z-stones are universally useful for all pokemon, and all the animations that would need to be made have already been made in s/m.

They'll probably add a few new z-moves for the next batch of starters and maybe a few others for special mons, but otherwise all the work is already done and can just be reused in future games.

Remember the main reason they did what they did with megastones is to screw with Smogon and have certain megas become available at random times just to make the meta constantly shifting.

OP, I have a leak for you. In the 8th generation of Pokemon they don't have a new "gimmick" planned.

What they plan on doing is combining Z-crystals and megastones. So, every mega gets a unique z-move+they mega evolve

Problem is, Z Moves typically aren't worth sacrificing an itemslot for. Most things prefer consistent damage (Life Orb / Choice Item), health recovery, stat-boosting, or THEIR OWN DAMN MEGA STONE. Unless it could fuse with another item, it's only really worth it for a niche few.
