The clear division in the community started when gen III didn't allow for transfer. A lot of people, including me, quit pokemon right then and there only to come back during the HGSS era.
It has been a division between Johtofags and Hoennfags ever since. Sinnohfags and Unovafags are just disguise Johtofags and Hoennfags, respectively.
