Suggestions for teams are also welcome.

Currently doing an emerald emulator and am near the 3rd gym, I need a water type (I want a spheal but I got a while for that) and I have no idea what to fill the rest with. Any ideas?

Finished an Emerald game myself a few weeks ago. My team was:

Sceptile
Aggron
Gardevoir
Swellow
Whiscash
Ninetails

And after that I did Platinum:

Infernape
Gyarados
Alakazam
Honchkrow
Hippowdon
Roserade

They're all pretty basic I guess but I hadn't played pokemon in years. Next I'll play Heart Gold but I'm still planning my team. I'm trying to avoid using pokemon I've used in the past and limiting myself to that region's pokemon only.

Nice nicknames, reminds me when I did a Leaf Green run with AC/DC songs for nicknames. Since then I always call my Blastoises "War Machine".

He's my favorite and my first shiny I ever hatched. I dunno, I don't user him on every playthrough just the one that o use as my main where I get all the items and breed and such.

All of those are better experiences than trying to raise a Pikachu. Granted, I tried in the earlier gens before they gave it a bunch of bonus stuff.

I know but I was willing to try. I'll give it a lightball and Nasty Plot and see how it goes. My other alternative was Gengar with Thunderbolt so I could do that if things don't work out

Do you guys have any tricks for coming up with nicknames? I can never think of any good ones so I normally skip doing them but I'd like to do it as it might make the pokes feel a bit more personal.

I generally look up names from media and stories that can be tied to the pokemon, or subtle puns. Like Hobbes or Travis for an Incineroar, or Farah (as in a Faraday cage) for any female electric type. I tend to avoid outright joke names.

My advice is to remember the stories you liked as a kid and draw names from there.
