The point of gym leaders is for new players to learn type charts and catch a good type variety for your team.
The Elite 4 should be based on a theme (slow pokemon, fast pokemon, physical pokemon, special pokemon, stall pokemon, weather based teams, terrain based teams, etc.) rather than types. It would actually make them something close to a challenge
Pokemon Colosseum and XD nailed this perfectly. All the bosses in those games had a strategy you needed to understand before you could beat it.
