Greninja's weaknesses had nothing to do with the ban, it's frail as fuck and dies even to neutral hits. Protean was broken because with it's attacking stats and movepool, there was nothing you could switch in that could be guaranteed to survive

Not unless you switch, because the likely situation would be that your Pheromosa is probably the best check to the opposing Pokemon. By U-turning, you'll have to switch in a less than ideal Pokemon.

Greninja was banned because it destroyed Balance with how insane its coverage was. Balance actually lost at team preview most of the time and if they had a counter, the second it got damaged they just lost.

Greninja was banned because nothing in the game could reliably beat it. Even things like Empoleon were beaten by Low Kick. Nowadays even with Toxapex and a lot more faster threats that can easily OHKO it, Greninja is still a top 3 best pokemon in the tier.

Toxapex is a shitty, passive momentum killer that will get set up on or otherwise taken advantage of by large amounts of the meta, and without Chansey and Skarmory to protect the team from these set up sweepers it has a negative effect on the team.

It's the same reason you can't just toss a Chansey or a Quagsire on those teams.

I don't think the meta would be completely ruined by Landorus not being around anymore, however most physical attackers like Excadrill, Charizard-X and even Terrakion would start to be fairly more threatening than before.

The community that's effectively Smogon existed under a different name in IRC channels using IRC battle bots. A lot of the key members to that community go back to 2001. It was still there, just not as noteworthy as now. They still did bans like SleepPerishTrap during that era.

Landorus-T is a necessary evil. So many other things would get out of hand without it. It's not like it's some unbeatable beast either. It's got a lot of versatility and surprise factor but it's still got a shitload of weaknesses.
