Kind of reminds me of the pre-release Guzma, where everyone thought he was a big and goofy softy who only formed team skull because of the cards he was dealt in life, then would later team up with the player to stop Aether. The prediction wasn't too far off, but I still would have liked that version better.

It was just speculation. Nobody was making bets that this was definitely going to happen. It was people noticing the similarity between the "non-pokemon" ultra beasts and the new characters. It was more like people were saying "imagine if...", "what if..." or "wouldn't it be crazy if...". At the time there was an actual discussion if Ultra Beasts would be pokemon and/or if you could catch them.

It's easy now to say ultra beasts are pokemon but nintendo was misleading with their wording fueling speculation.
