...which is really why there aren't any really popular Unova mons. They weren't pushed by gf because they were afraid of the controversy, and many genwunners hated them, so they've been selectively ignored. It's pretty sad.

Your pic in the OP is the only one, bar maybe Zoroark and Scrafty and such, that enjoyed any extreme success. It even shows in the Generations episode it was featured in.

IIRC, Stunfisk was a massive hit in Japan. Merch flew off the shelves like crazy. Piplup was pushed way harder, but Stunfisk didn't even have to try and it was a juggernaut.

They even doubled down on the merch and made stuff like bath mats and slippers.

I don't know. Zekrom was shilled a bit more than Reshiram, with it appearing in the first episode of the BW anime, being Nobunaga's Pokemon in Conquest, and being the main character's power in that shitty Reburst manga. But I don't feel like it was the same level as something like Charizard, Lucario, or Greninja.

If the GTS is any indication, Landorus is in ridiculously high demand. I see people grubbing for Lando more than any other of the ridiculous Legendaries that people want.

I mean, if we're talking Charizard or Lucario levels of popularity here, there's really not that many. Just Pikachu, Charizard, Mewtwo, Lucario, and Greninja. ie. the Smash Bros Pokemon minus Jigglypuff. Maybe Eevee could be added too.

Gen II and III don't really have Pokemon on that level either. Sure there's popular ones, like Typlosion, Feraligatr, Heracross, Scizor, Suicune, Lugia, Sceptile, Blaziken, Gardevoir, and Rayquaza. But none of those feel like they overshadow the rest of the gen like Lucario, or are pandered when it's not relevant like Genwun Pokemon are, or shilled as hard and fast as Greninja was.

And Gen V is the same way. So I don't get why it's being singled out, except for not having as many Megas or Pokken characters (not that Gen II has the latter either).

Zekrom was a widely appealing Pokémon. Dragon-types are popular by default, and Zekrom got a lot of love for having the recognizable body shape of a classic dragon but having extra details that make it look ancient, fearsome, cool and unique, like a draconic Darth Vader. It was loved widely enough to get 10th place on an IGN popularity poll shortly after the release of BW, even though the top 10 was mostly genwunner favorites and Rayquaza. Many like to claim "muh objectivity" in terms of the art design, and I will concede that it is quite likely that on the whole, there is a general trend towards cartoonyness. However, it is purely opinion whether or not that's a bad thing. You say it's bad, others say it's just fine. Trying to discuss further than establishing your opinions and reasons for that opinion is an exercise in futility for both sides.
