In fact I'm also willing to wager that the localization team didn't think stuff was "too Japanese", rather, it wasn't "west enough". The songs they take out and replace aren't taken out because those songs are ill suited, they take them out because they think they have a better option, or think that a rewritten score could resonate better with the target audience. I think they're full of shit most of the time, but at least there are some gems that come out of it, like the aforementioned Lugia's song.
