According to an NPC, the Battle Royal is based on how the Tapus occasionally get together to duke it out.

Aside from that, they don't interact much.

They don't. They each have an island to protect and never see each other except once a year during the holidays. Each year a different Tapu hosts the party in their island. They come together like Voltron and wreck havoc.
