It's a crying shame that GF doesn't put as much effort and respect into the pokemon franchise as some of the fans do.
X and Y had plenty of problems that I overlooked my first play through, mostly due to the fact that it was our first dip into the 3D world and I was pretty damn excited for all of it. The story was horridly paced, the friend characters were all wastes of space, the villains were dumb and most werent even important, and while most of the models were great, the animations were bland and lacking in personality.
But I over looked all of it, mainly because they made online accessibility easy and fun, and made actually made it possible to breed without tearing my hair out. Not to mention, it was their first dip into 3D from a long history of 2D sprite games, so I expected things to start off a touch rocky.
By the time SM came out, I expected most of these issues to be ironed out.
The story was fine, but smothering. For the first time I didnt feel like I was on an adventure, but instead a tour. The story focused way too much on Lille, when the interesting characters were the villains, who got an islands worth of game time (and both felt fairly anti-climactic.), and quite obviously portions of the story were unfinished. Pokemon stats were a joke, Alolan forms really under performed my expectations, most new pokemon either had a 5% appear rate, evolved at the very end of the game, or couldnt be caught until the story was mostly over. Lag is almost worst, despite taking out triple, rotation and swarm battles. Getting online is a pain in the ass an out of the way of compared to the glory of PSS and breeding, while not quite as bad as old installments, ruined what was essentially perfect.
By any standards, they are okay games. But at this point, I dont expect "okay" games from GF. They sit at the top of the throne for monster collecting games, and they should respect and strive to be the best of the best.
